ARBOUR HOUSE - SPACE ART PROJECT

Late 2021, I was commissioned by the (now retired) lead scientist of the Canadian Space Agency to complete 2 Space paintings for his new home, the Arbour House. Below is an image of myself, his lovely wife Toni, and a member from their design team, as we discuss lighting the artwork. On the wall is a mock-up of the painting.

This was a significant milestone in my career, and was a very challenging project in terms of the size of the painting, the technical aspects for both pieces, and because my client is an actual space scientist who understands how things look and work in outer space. I was totally up for the challenge, and honoured to be chosen to create these artworks.

Working in a home designed by Patkau Architects - an award winning design firm with a world class portfolio; was also a wonderful challenge for me. The bar is very high when art goes into a home designed by Patkau.

This was a highly rewarding experience from beginning to end.

The process
It started with various conversations about the project with my clients, the team from PATKAU Architects, and the electrical/ lighting team working on the home. The image below is from a meeting where I used a mock-up to map out the UV lights in relation to the actual painting, which is 8 feet by 5 feet.

Throughout the process, topics discussed were the clients vision, UV lighting specifications, and my overall input on the paintings. Once all details were finalized, I began the project. We used Rosco UV cube lights to light up these works.
