Electrical activity emanating from the brain is displayed in the form of brainwaves. There are four categories of these brainwaves, including theta; which are typically of great amplitude and run at a slower frequency than alpha and beta. A theta state of mind is found when we're very calm and relaxed, daydreaming, about to drift off to sleep, or having just woken up. We can also enter theta waves when we're operating on autopilot (driving, for example).

Theta is also the gateway to creativity, learning and intuition, allowing access the power of the unconscious mind, which we can’t access in a more alert state (such as alpha and beta). Theta plays an important part in behavior modification programs and has been used in the treatment of drug and alcohol addiction. Theta state is also a gateway to super-learning and memory and an ideal state for re-programming the mind, dream recall, and self-hypnosis. Scientists have discovered that the Theta state can also reduce stress, facilitate deep physical relaxation and mental clarity, provide a gateway to super learning, better synchronize the two hemispheres of the brain, recall mental images, evoke imaginative and creative thinking, reduce pain, promote euphoria and stimulate the release of endorphins and provide immune system improvement.

I am a long time meditator and one of my all time favourite ways to enter into theta is with with meditation. It feels super relaxing and the mind is very open to positive messages and creative ideas. I sometimes think I go into theta when I enter a flow state while creating art.
